Nic Maddinson

An attacking left-hander, Nic Maddinson was a surprise inclusion in Australia's Test squad against South Africa in 2016-17 following the infamous loss in the second Test of that series, in Hobart, but he struggled in his three outings that season.

A highly rated player at junior levels, Maddinson emerged in 2010-11, when at 18 he became the youngest player to score a century on first-class debut for New South Wales - a record that was broken the next summer by Kurtis Patterson. Maddinson was called up for his T20I debut against India in 2013 and scored 34 off 16 balls.

In 2018-19 he moved to Victoria and scored 162 on debut for them, but had his arm broken in the same game. He returned after the BBL to score two more hundreds and averaged 80.42 for the season. A double-century in the opening round of the following season kept him firmly in national contention but he withdrew from an Australia A squad to manage his mental health. On returning, he finished his most productive season till then with 780 runs at 86.66.

An ACL injury in early January 2023 kept him out for a year but as Australia started to look at life beyond David Warner, Maddinson surged into the picture with three centuries in four games on his comeback to Shield cricket in the latter part of the 2023-24 season. However, a return to his native New South Wales for the following season brought a lean run of form that saw him slip back down the pecking order.
