Profile & Biography

Pathum Nissanka's batting is built on a solid technical foundation, highlighted by crisp back-foot punches and elegant drives. For the most part, at least. His evolution as a batter since his debut in March 2021 - in a Test series against West Indies - has been particularly noteworthy.
Breaking on to the scene with a dogged century on debut, he was initially labelled a gritty accumulator. A modest T20I strike rate of 112 (pre-2024) only strengthened the view that his future lay in the longest format, but since then he has soaked in the data and knowledge afforded to him and transformed his game to an almost unrecognisable level.
With his slight frame - he stands at 5'6" - he lacks the long levers typical of modern power-hitters, but he has found a way to marry his elite timing and traditional technique with clever tweaks to significantly boost his strike rate over recent years.
Since the start of 2024 - up until the end of the T20 World Cup in February 2026 - he had struck at a strike rate of 143.65. In this period, he has improved his T20I boundary frequency significantly, and successfully integrated modern innovations like the lap scoop and reverse sweeps into his arsenal, allowing him to dominate all phases of play.
Born on May 18, 1998 in Galle, Nissanka's early life was humble. His father was a groundsman at the local club, and his mother sold flowers near the Kalutara temple. His father also served as his first coach, conducting daily throwdown sessions that instilled a strong work ethic from a young age.
Nissanka attended Kalutara Vidyalaya before moving to Isipathana College in Colombo to further his prospects. He first drew national attention with an unbeaten 205 off 190 balls in a school championship match. By the time he reached the international stage in 2021, he had amassed an impressive first-class average of 67.54, making his selection inevitable, and eventually made his debut under head coach Mickey Arthur.
Since his debut, Nissanka has shattered several long-standing records. He became the fourth Sri Lankan to score a century on Test debut and the first to do so away from home; on February 9, 2024, he became the first Sri Lanka batter to score an ODI double hundred, an unbeaten 210 against Afghanistan; and in 2026, he became the first Sri Lanka batter to record multiple T20I hundreds, including a 52-ball century against Australia in the 2026 T20 World Cup. His performances also earned him an IPL contract, when he was signed by Delhi Capitals for INR 4 crore (US$470,000) in the 2026 IPL auction.
All of which has undoubtedly cemented Nissanka's legacy as the primary architect of Sri Lanka's modern batting era.
