Profile & Biography

Though he averaged a little under 50 in 75 Tests, it will be for his unflappable demeanour as captain, and for leading Pakistan out of the morass of the 2010 spot-fixing affair, that Misbah will primarily be remembered.
Leadership did not sit heavy on his shoulders, as his consistency with the bat soon after taking charge of the side testified. He could defend with unflagging patience, or irritate bowlers with his improvisations, and his defence was sound, providing a foundation that helped him bat long in Test cricket. That aspect of his game was in evidence from his first innings, in 2001, when he survived over two hours to score 28 in Auckland. So it surprised nearly everyone when he equalled Viv Richards' long-held record for the fastest Test hundred - off 56 balls - against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2014. It was Misbah's second century of the match, the first coming at a more familiar pace, off 166 balls.
He was held back by his inconsistency in the early 2000s: he didn't play a Test between the middle of 2003 and late 2007, and only turned up in a handful of ODIs in that period.
However, a run-filled domestic season, followed by a spell in club cricket in England and Inzamam-ul-Haq's retirement from ODIs, made the PCB hand Misbah a central contract in July 2007. A month later, he was surprisingly picked, ahead of Mohammad Yousuf, in the squad for the first T20 World Cup in South Africa. Famously, he nearly took Pakistan to the title. It was perhaps his finest hour in white-ball international cricket, alongside his four fifties in the 2015 ODI World Cup.
His run of form continued into the Test tour of India in 2007-08, where he scored 82 and two sizeable hundreds, each of which spanned more than 400 minutes.
Come 2011, Misbah rose above the crowd and established his credentials as a top-class batter and leader of men. He was in charge when Pakistan completed one of their greatest Test series wins - a 3-0 sweep over the No. 1 side of the time, England, in early 2012. Under him Pakistan built a reputation as a formidable side in the UAE, where they played their home games for most of the 2010s, winning or drawing nine series, including against South Africa, Australia, and England again in 2015-16.
After twin 99s in the first two matches of his last Test series, in the West Indies in 2017, Misbah had a fairy-tale ending when in the last match, in Roseau, Pakistan wrested an unlikely win to take the series 2-1.
He was appointed Pakistan coach and chief selector in 2019, the first time in the country's history that one person had held both posts.
