Match Report

Good start to the Test series. The quality of cricket wasn't always at its best but it kept getting better as the Test progressed. Hope that trend continues and that this series continues to play up to the wait and the billing it's gotten. Today's report will be up here. Gnasher and Firdose's stories will be up soon, check it out. Thanks from me, Ekanth, Alex Malcolm, my co-commentator, and our scorers over the Test, Vairavan, Ranjith and Raghav. See you for the Gqeberha Test.
Thamizhachi : "Bet against Australia if you are ready to lose capital!"
Pat Cummins, Australia captain: Great performance, lot built on Renshaw's performance on day 1. We managed to clinch and hold onto the lead from there. Everywhere I look, there's Test wickets. The two quicks and Lyno always get to work, makes my life easy. I haven't played a lot of Tests in 18 months and that felt as good as I could. Felt I could bowl more overs when needed. It's nice being 1-0 up, better than the alternative. Playing away is hard, getting the win and confidence is good. Hazlewood is known for being consistent but that undersells him as he can reverse the ball, get the pace up, bowl anywhere; he's the captain's dream.
Temba Bavuma, SA captain: Not the way you eant to start. Got to give it to Australia. Dominated most of the game, even from 124 for 6. We don't want to give them the opportunity to get back. We'll need to have conversations. Guys have to go big in the first innings for us, like Renshaw did for them. Number of guys got in in the first innings, couldn't go big. Their bowling was proactive and we'll learn from how they played.
Matt Renshaw, POTM: Pretty tired. Been a while since I played a five-day Test. Wanted to stay out as long as I could on day 1. Build partnerships with bowlers, had good allies, and play as many balls as possible. The conditions and fields against me it was hard to pick twos, so had to go for boundaries at times. Got lucky n the second innings, got edges away. Nice to bat at 5, different from opening, happy to do whatever's asked. Nice to hit the pitch with the ball after lobbing a few full tosses. Hopefully a few phone calls with the family.
James: "Australia were bowling just a tad over 6 hours in this innings for nearly 87 overs. By today's standards, that's a great over rate. I suspect Renshaw helped that too with his bowling."
AVC: "Lyon's value wasn't in wickets taken, but threat generated. Renshaw (and the tail) were able to accumulate against the SA spinners, which meant the SA quicks had to bowl more than ideal. Lyon never let the SA batsmen get away, so Australia could give their quicks more rotation time. Wickets get the headlines but Lyon contributed to this as well."
Seb: "is australia's over rate ok? they did take more than 80 overs to bowl sa out this time..." No confirmation, but if they are slow they will lose points as they bowled over 80 in the innings and 160 overs in the Test
Aayushman: "As an Aussie cricket fan, chuffed by this result but equally nervous about how hard will South Africa hit back in the next Test. Fingers crossed - hope things don't go the way it did in 2018." Vastly different circumstances. This team has it's issues, not least the 21 Tests in a year, but a scandal like sandpaper seems unlikely
Possum: "Garry the goat wicketless in the 4th innings, wouldn't have thought that " Yeah, that doesn't justify how well he bowled, but the economy does, as will some of the wickets at the other end that wouldn't have been likely without partnership bowling
Mustafa Moudi: "The way Steve Smith is took catches this test, seems like he is desperate to take his CPI to 1.00. What a Fielder !!"
Rob: "Australia win by Matt Renshaw " Yep, he scored 272 and took two-for. Will be a tough POTM call for the adjudicators
Joel: "Even written off Australia is too hot to handle." Knives were out, they still are, but not written off I'd say, at least not by smart means
ryan: "B-E-S-T E-V-E-R figures in a test innings for Hazelwood!!!!"
1:23pm, Day 5, End of Test: Smiles around Australia's team, Hazlewood leads them off. South Africa dug deep, Markram and Mulder dug deep, but they lost four yesterday and the damage Renshaw did throughout the Test was too much. The bowling was as good as it would get today. The tap was turned off in bright, dry conditions with Australia holding good lengths, and going further back when looking to shut down scoring. Lyon did the same with his overspin and bounce. It was going so well before Hazlewood's reverse swing and Carey's glovework combined to get Mulder last session. Jansen and Markram tried their darnedest and faced 105 balls but the bush-horse took the new ball and took side to the finish line.

Hazlewood to Nortje

Is that the Test? Yes, Hazlewood takes a career-best six for, good old Australia take a 1-0 lead. First loss as Test captain for Bavuma. Short ball at the body, Nortje was rushed on the pull and tamely popped a catch to short midwicket

Hazlewood to Nortje

Crazy good! Five slips in place and Nortje places it in the gap! He slashed at the wide ball, got it low off the bat It went between second and third if not the next slip

Hazlewood to Maharaj

No strike farming then. Maharaj was on the back foot, trying to fend it straight. Thick outside edge went low gully, fielder went for the catch, tumbled and splashed the ball to the right

Hazlewood to Maharaj

Not sure what single Maharaj was looking for. You'd expect him to farm strike now. Was a back of length ball in the channel that was punched to cover's right. Maharaj took a few steps and ran back

Starc to Markram

an appeal for caught behind given not out! Australia review. Good length, fourth stump, it nipped back a touch, he gets a little inside edge onto back thigh and it carries to Carey! Ultraedge shows a little spike as he tried to defend and it brushed the back thigh and got through to Carey. Great review. Unfortunate way to go for Markram. Another excellent delivery.

Hazlewood to Harmer

caught behind! Unplayable! Five for Hazlewood! Good length and this leaps from a length like a viper from a pit! Steep bounce as he played from the crease, brushed the top of the glove, flicked the right shoulder and Carey took it leaping high to his right! Amazing he even got a touch on that. Could have easily missed it. Could have also taken his head off if it was straighter. Ridiculous delivery

bowled him! Through the gate! Superb delivery. Perfect length, angled in, wobble seam, Jansen played for shape, not sure why he played that line, it kept angling in through the gate and smashed the off bail out of the grooves
