John Turner

John Turner announced a shock retirement from professional cricket aged just 25 after losing his battle with injuries.

Born in South Africa, Turner went to the prestigious Hilton College before moving to the UK to study economics and finance at the University of Exeter, thanks to his British passport via his English mother. He joined Hampshire in 2021 after a successful trial, with some help from former coach Dale Benkenstein, and was fast-tracked into England's T20 squad two years later despite minimal first-team experience after he caught the eye bowling fast for Trent Rockets during the Hundred.

He had to wait for his debut, and was the spare man in several squads over the next 18 months, but he won four caps - two ODI, two T20I - against West Indies on a tour to the Caribbean in late 2024. He struggled to break into Hampshire's County Championship side and went on loan to Lancashire in early 2025 in search of further opportunities, but struggled to recover from a back stress fracture sustained that summer and announced his retirement with two years left on his Hampshire contract.
