Imrul Kayes

Imrul Kayes was, with Tamim Iqbal, one half of Bangladesh's most successful opening partnership in Tests and ODIs. But through his decade-long career, he had a tough time holding down his place in the national side. He missed more ODIs than he played, and despite being more consistent than many of Tamim's partners, he was frequently dropped in Tests too.

In 2015, Tamim and he made 312 opening in the second innings of a Test against Pakistan, breaking a 55-year-old record. Imrul made 150 in that stand, after having kept wicket in place of Mushfiqur Rahim for 120 overs. It was his third hundred in four matches, and the last of his Test career, though that lasted another four years in on-off fashion.

Imrul's international career began in 2008, on the back of big domestic scores, and he was Bangladesh's most prolific ODI run-scorer in 2010, with 867 runs. The following year, he won two Player-of-the-Match awards in the ODI World Cup campaign, but by 2012, he had lost his place.

In 2016, when Imrul made another comeback, coach Chandika Hathurusingha helped him find focus in ODI cricket; he scored his second century in the format, against England, and averaged 46 that year.

His Test career ended with a whimper - he went over a dozen matches without a fifty - but his white-ball one finished with a bang: he made 349 runs, with two centuries and a big fifty, against Zimbabwe in his penultimate ODI series, in 2018.
