Profile & Biography

The career of Haseeb Hameed is among the more storied in English cricket. Hameed played three Tests as a 19-year-old and was hailed as the future of England's batting, only to be released by his boyhood county, Lancashire, at the age of 22; reinvigorated by a move to Nottinghamshire, he returned for another short-lived spell in the Test XI, before settling into a leadership role at county level, overseeing Notts' County Championship triumph in 2025.
Picked up at his lowest moment, Hameed thrived at Trent Bridge under the guidance of Peter Moores. He scored three hundreds in his first full County Championship season for Notts, after Covid-19 wrecked his debut summer, leading to his Test recall. A pair of fifties against India ensured he would head to Australia as starting opener for the 2021-22 Ashes - but a grim run of six single-figure scores saw him lose his spot after England's draw in Sydney to avert a whitewash.
Unbowed, he returned to Trent Bridge and passed 1000 runs for the season for the first time since 2016 as Notts won promotion. He was named captain of England Lions that winter, scoring 145 off 172 balls in a warm-up game against the Test XI before their tour of Pakistan, but his chance seemed to have gone and he only averaged 28.08 as Notts returned to Division One. Having led the 50-over team since 2021, he was given the Championship captaincy ahead of the 2024 season and produced another 1000-run campaign, which included a career-best 247 not out against Lancashire; the next year, he made 1258 at 66.21 as Notts claimed the pennant for the first time since 2010.
Lancashire had not produced an England opening bat since Michael Atherton played his last Test in 2001, but Hameed ended that run when he made his Test debut against India in Rajkot in November 2016. Such an accolade had long been predicted for the Bolton-born Hameed, who was tipped for great things from an early age. Even before he had struck a ball in Test cricket, he was dubbed "Baby Boycott" by his England colleagues, testament to a disciplined and unflappable style which identified him as a bit of a throwback.
Hameed's Test debut was an impressive affair, as he made 31 and 82 in a methodical manner. His maiden Test 50 brought tears in the stand from his father Ismail, whose obsessive coaching since childhood had helped to hone a player of considerable worth. It was an appropriate place for his Test debut: although he was a born-and-bred Lancastrian, his roots could be traced back to Gujurat and his brother, Numan, had got married in the state a few days earlier.
However, in the third Test at Mohali, Hameed suffered a finger fracture that would require surgery and the insertion of a metal plate. He was fit for the 2017 season but only managed three fifties in the Championship while averaging 28.50 and missed out on involvement in the Ashes. Worse was to come, as the following summer brought 165 runs in 17 innings for Lancashire, at an average of 9.70. Although he started the 2019 season with a century - his first in almost three years - he only passed 50 once more, leading to his release by Lancashire and subsequent signing by Notts.
As a teenager, Hameed was justifiably seen as one of the outstanding young batters in the country. Having developed a reputation for prolific scoring with England U-19s, he blossomed late in the 2015 season when he made an outstanding 91 in only his third Championship match. His first full season of Championship cricket in 2016 saw him set a swathe of records: the youngest batter to score 1000 runs in a season for Lancashire - eclipsing Atherton - the fifth-youngest overall and the first to score a hundred in each innings of the Roses match.
