Asitha Fernando

Although short for a fast bowler, what Asitha lacks in height, he makes up for in intensity and he has built his reputation as a fast bowler through persistence and adaptability. Though he entered the international scene early, earning an ODI call-up when he wasn't yet 20, it's in Test cricket that Asitha has really shone, somewhat filling the void left by Suranga Lakmal's retirement in 2022.

Asitha made his Test debut in South Africa in 2021 when Sri Lanka were hit by a raft of injuries to their bowling attack. In his fifth Test - coming right after Lakmal's departure - he tore through Bangladesh's line-up in Mirpur with reverse swing, claiming 6 for 51 and finishing with his maiden ten-wicket haul. Along with fellow fast bowler Kasun Rajitha, Asitha showed the ability to strike with both new and old ball, unsettling batters with short deliveries and late movement.

By 2024, Asitha had elevated his standing further, finishing the series in England as the leading wicket-taker, with 17 wickets at 24.6, including a five-for at Lord's. A high-effort seamer who can swing the ball both ways without altering his wrist position, he thrives on discipline, hitting consistent lengths even on flat pitches. On the back of those performances, he became Glamorgan's first Sri Lankan player when they signed him on for the 2025 county season.

While he has been viewed mostly as a Test specialist, Asitha has had a more consistent run in Sri Lanka's ODI side since 2025, aided by his skiddy pace, accuracy, and reliable bouncer.
