Annabel Sutherland

There's strong competition, but Annabel Sutherland could be the next great Australian cricketer. Before turning 24 she had six international centuries, three of them in Tests including a double century, and had developed into a highly-skilled bowler at any stage of an innings across formats.

Sutherland made her WBBL debut aged 15 and she quickly became a player of national interest, making 22 not out off 11 balls on her T20I debut (or earn a Super Over against England) and getting a spot in the 2020 T20 World Cup squad. She made her Test debut against India in 2021 and featured in both the 2021-22 Ashes and ODI World Cup which followed, but it was in 2023 that her career really took off.

There was a maiden Test century against England at Trent Bridge in the 2023 Ashes followed by her first in ODIs, against Ireland. The following year Sutherland scored 210 against South Africa in Perth, and the next season 163 in the Ashes Test at the MCG.

In ODI cricket, a promotion up the batting order brought back-to-back centuries against India and New Zealand, propelling her to the 2025 Belinda Clark Award, which she won again in 2026.

In T20Is, it's her bowling that has really flourished, partly because batting opportunities are often limited. She claimed consecutive four-wicket hauls against New Zealand in early 2025.

Sutherland's brother, Will, plays for Victoria and has also reached international level. Their father, James, was the long-time CEO of Cricket Australia having also played state cricket.
