Ireland legspinner Ben White has retired from professional cricket at the age of 28. White played the most recent of his 43 international matches last December, and has taken up a new role with software development company Personio.
White made his international debut in July 2021 and was viewed as a long-term option to fill Ireland's wristspin void. He took 36 wickets in 38 T20Is and was involved in Ireland squads at three T20 World Cups: 2021 (in the UAE), 2024 (in the USA) and 2026 (in Sri Lanka), though only played three games across those tournaments.
He was only used sporadically in the longer formats, winning two ODI caps in 2023 and three Test caps earlier that year. He took three wickets on Test debut against Bangladesh but returned combined figures of 1 for 322 as Ireland lost consecutive Tests by an innings in Sri Lanka, with his lack of red-ball experience - he had never previously played a first-class match - exposed.
"After an incredible journey, I'm excited to share that I'm retiring from professional cricket and beginning a new chapter, having joined Personio as a Business Development Representative UKI," White wrote on his LinkedIn page.
"Representing Ireland over the years, playing across all three formats, and competing at three ICC Cricket World Cups are experiences I'll always look back on with immense pride.
"A huge thank you to Cricket Ireland for giving me the opportunity to represent my country and live out a childhood dream. I'm incredibly grateful for the memories, lessons and life-long friendships that cricket has given me, along with everyone who has been part of the journey."
Gary Wilson, Ireland's head coach, said in a press release: "While he played all formats, Ben will be fondly remembered for his T20 cricket the most. His ability to extract bounce and bowl at great pace made him a handful. Making three T20 World Cup squads is testament to the esteem he was held in, and he should be proud of what he achieved over his career."
