Tea Bangladesh 177 for 3 (Shadman 79*, Hridoy 36*, Warrican 2-28) vs West Indies
Opening batter Shadman Islam held the innings together for Bangladesh as they went to tea on the first day of the first Test against West Indies in Dhaka on 177 for 3. Shadman was unbeaten on 79 off 167 balls, having put on 67 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket with Towhid Hridoy, who was not out on 36 off 74 balls at the break.
Bangladesh started the session cautiously, with Shadman approaching his fifty. He reached the milestone in the 35th over with a single off Jayden Seales, though it was followed soon after by Najmul Hossain Shanto's wicket.
It was another soft dismissal - the third of the innings - when the Bangladesh captain missing with his paddle sweep against Jomel Warrican to be lbw for 19. The initial on-field decision had been in Shanto's favout but the review showed that the ball would have hit the middle and leg stumps.
Hridoy, playing his first Test since his debut in Harare in July this year, started off with an easy boundary off Shamar Joseph, before playing an excellent pull off the same bowler a little later. Shadman, meanwhile, continued to accumulate slowly, playing aggressive shots only to deliveries that were in his zone and against Justin Greaves' friendly pace.
Bangladesh made a decent enough start to the Test match after electing to bat first. The going in the first half-hour was slow as Jayden Seales worked over Tanzid Hasan, who eventually edged a wide one after being tested outside the off stump from around the wicket. Greaves took the catch at slip as Tanzid fell for 7.
Shadman was the dominant figure, finding regular boundaries after seeing off the initial threat. He found boundaries against deliveries that were close to his body, before opening up with a square cut and a cover drive, to finish the session with five boundaries. By then, he had lost his second partner, Mominul Haque, stepping out to Warrican in the bowler's first over and hitting the ball straight to mid-off.
