Mominul Haque, Bangladesh's No. 3 batter, has been replaced by Jaker Ali as a concussion substitute after suffering a head injury while fielding on the third day of the first Test against West Indies in Dhaka.
He suffered the injury shortly after the lunch break - in the 78th over of West Indies' first innings - when attempting a catch close to the bat.
Joshua Bishop, the batter, defended Mehidy Hasan Miraz's offspin with hard hands, sending the ball flying to the left of Mominul, the short-leg fielder. Mominul flung himself, caught the ball, but then lost control of it, and fell face first to the ground with his helmet on. He was taken off the field immediately.
Mominul had suffered "a head injury", Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said in a statement. "As he has shown signs of concussion, he has been replaced by Jaker Ali Anik as the concussion sub for the remainder of the match."
Later, when Bangladesh lost their third wicket in their second innings, Jaker was seen padded up to bat, and had to make his way to the middle soon after when captain Najmul Hossain Shanto fell to Roston Chase, becoming the West Indies captain's third wicket of the innings. Jaker had just got off the mark before rain stopped play and tea was taken early. Shanto had batted at Mominul's usual No. 3 position.
For Jaker, it's a return to Test cricket after 16 months - his last Test appearance was against Sri Lanka in June 2025.
He had a job on his hands too, with Bangladesh going to tea at 34 for 4 in their second innings, a lead of only 61 runs.
