Today's edition of WORD PLAY features a player turned commentator you will surely know.
Sikandar Raza: "I thought after a shaky start, that partnership sort of held the innings together really well. We've looked at the last 10 games and analyzed all the data as well, so to get to 271 is certainly a good effort. But I thought those two boys, Wellington and Newman, with cricket being such a momentum game, gave us some momentum, and that was very important to finish the first innings on 271. At least it gave us something to bowl at, and looking at the stats as well, 265 has been par, so I was pretty happy with 271.
[Pleased with the bowling efforts] Yeah, certainly. I thought Blessing was very unlucky and was bowling well. We needed guys to bowl well together. We've been guilty in the past where two guys haven't really clicked, one is bowling well and the other isn't, and that's something we discuss and need to get better at in international cricket. But I thought the character shown was brilliant because they were ahead of the game after 15 overs, sitting at only two down close to 100 runs, and the way we fought back was certainly something I am very pleased about.
[Fielding effort] Yeah, certainly, because we've spent a lot of time on it, and we have lost a lot of games because of our fielding in the past. We want to be known as a good fielding side. Fielding is something that is non-negotiable; it's within you, about attitude, about how much you're enjoying being out in the middle with your teammates and wanting to fight the opposition. So fielding is something we can control. Dropped catches and misfields happen here and there, but if your attitude is good and you're going for every ball, eventually things click. All those catches that didn't stick start to stick, and I think that's due to the great attitude these boys have got and our team culture.
[Two nice personal landmarks for you] I don't care about these things, to be honest. 100 international wickets is certainly something more for my teammates, family, and fans to be proud of. It's been a long journey, but Alhamdulillah, it's just another milestone; these are things I don't really care about. Not winning as a captain, I don't care. But being part of the team, not winning at all is what hurts me the most. If we have won today, hopefully this is the start of many more wins to come. Regardless of whether I'm captain or Richard is captain, when we put on this jersey, the aim is to win. So this win is as good as any other win, and I've been part of it. A win is something we enjoy and take a lot of pride in.
[Recovery] I think this is our first tour to the subcontinent in this kind of weather, and it has hit us hard. It's going to come down to mental toughness and discipline from all of us together. We're going to have to push and help our teammates do the right things, because in the next 36 hours, not even 36 hours, we are back here trying to put everything on the line for our country. So it's very important that we do the right things."
Towhid Hridoy: "Actually, we bowled really well. It's a very decent pitch to bat on here. So, as a batting unit, we made a couple of mistakes. We had a very good start, but in the middle, we didn't do well.
[Target score] It was chaseable. As I mentioned earlier, our bowlers bowled really well. As a batting unit, we should take responsibility to chase a target like this. [Reviews taken] Obviously we will talk about it, but sometimes you need to trust the bowler and keeper as well.
[Batting efforts] No, obviously disappointing. It's a very good, very decent pitch to bat on here. So actually, we made silly mistakes. Hopefully, we will overcome this. [First time leading the National Team] Yeah, it's a pride for me and a pride for our family as well. So hopefully it will continue, Inshallah."
Player of the Match, Craig Ervine: "[What pleased you the most today?] I think obviously getting the win in the end. I think all the work that went into the batting innings, obviously getting the reward at the end with the team getting over the line. [Gutted to miss out on the hundred] Yeah, obviously it's disappointing. I think to bat for that long, knowing that there's still six, seven overs to go, you kind of want to get to your three-figure mark and then sort of cash in at the back end. But unfortunately, it wasn't the case today. I think obviously at this stage you sort of take each game as it comes. It's nice to be in a bit of form, obviously coming off the Australian series, scoring some runs there, and then starting like I did today, I thought it was great, and hopefully that can continue.
[Batting with Taylor] It's always special batting with BT. I think he's always had that calm sort of air, I guess. And I thought the way he started his innings was really composed. Didn't get flustered too much with the strike rate and that, and then obviously built up and got the momentum back on our side.
[How was the pitch for batting?] I think at the start it obviously swung around a little bit, a little bit of nip off the seam, and then once that sort of wore off, we kind of decided that now is the time to sort of up the ante a little bit. I thought our partnership was really good, especially once the spin came on. I thought we scored quite freely. A couple of times we got a little bit bogged down, but with experience and not panicking under pressure, we continued and built a big partnership, which was the difference. [Straight into the ice bath and maybe a rest day tomorrow?] Yeah, I most definitely will be feet up tomorrow."
Brad Evans: "[Four-fer] Yeah, obviously it's nice to finish that way. Tanzid has had the better of us in the last few white-ball series. He's a nice player and tough to bowl at, but I think the message in the changing room is always just to give your best. You never know what's going to happen, and it's white-ball cricket, so the ball flies. But yeah, it just came together better in the second half.
[Dismissing Shanto] Yeah, it was a nice ball. I'm not sure why he went upstairs - we thought he might have hit it, but he didn't. But yeah, it was nice to come back like that. I just tried to hit the pitch hard from then on, and it paid off.
[Bowling in tandem] I mean, cricket's all about partnerships: batting, bowling, even in the field. You know, we're all great mates in that changing room, so we've always got each other's backs. Whenever we bowl or bat, we're just doing it for each other.
[Party from skipper Raza for the maiden ODI win] Obviously, there's only one day off between games, so we might have a few beers in the changing room, but we will be back in two days' time for another game."
Shimul: "I see no point for the BD team to continuously picking and investing on the proven failed players, even multiple times. Time to move on for some fresh faces."
Tasmeem: "@RONI HASAN Jaker had his chances, Akbar has faded. I think it's time to give Emon a proper go in ODIs at the top and with Litton back, the batting would be sorted out."
10:36 pm A dominating bowling display from Zimbabwe, aside from a few testing opening overs. Bangladesh came out guns blazing, thanks to Tanzid Hasan's aggressive approach from the first over, which immediately unsettled the Zimbabwean seamers. Tanzid continued his onslaught before falling for 46 runs, caught at backward point off the very last ball of the powerplay. After shrugging off that early battering, Zimbabwe's seamers regrouped well, picking up both openers during the powerplay, then the quick dismissal of Shanto. Raza then applied further pressure by trapping Hridoy plumb in front with a sharp spinning delivery. Bangladesh's innings derailed as dot balls piled up and their inability to rotate the strike became glaringly apparent once again. Temperament proved to be another hurdle, with batters repeatedly playing down the wrong line or rushing their strokes. They failed to build any substantial partnerships, leaving Saif to fight a lone battle from one end before he too departed for 26. Some late fireworks from Rishad gave the fans a brief glimmer of entertainment, but the contest had been effectively sealed long before. It was a true collective bowling effort from Zimbabwe, led by Evans with four wickets. Raza and Masakadza chipped in with two apiece, while Muzarabani and Nyamhuri claimed one each. It is a statement victory for Zimbabwe, providing a massive boost to their net run rate in this tri-series. This is also the first win for Sikandar Raza as the skipper of the ODI side.

Evans to Mustafizur

A poetic end to the innings - the cutter master falls to a cutter! Such majestic scenes are an absolute treat to watch and so rare in today's cricket world. Zimbabwe have completely outclassed and outperformed Bangladesh across all three departments. Evans bowls a slower fuller delivery angling in and Fizz closes the face of the bat too early, merely poking it softly back for a simple catch gratefully snapped up by the bowler. Handshakes and smiles all around for Zimbabwe.

Raza to Rishad Hossain

100th ODI wicket for Sikandar Raza! He lets himself loose by placing both hands in the air, closes his eyes with a soothing, peaceful expression, and whispers quietly while looking up at the night sky. Floated a fuller length delivery and Rishad goes for a massive heave across the line, mistiming the slog and picking out the long on fielder for a regulation catch.
